Fishing Boat Safety Tips
Fishing from a boat can just make the whole sport that much more enjoyable.
The fishing sport and the boating recreation activity are becoming more and more popular for people to take off up to the lake or down the river to enjoy their favorite fishing hole.
Take note of these safety tips so you can make your boating event more enjoyable. Do this before you set sail to get in some real fishing.
1. Check the rating on your boat to see what size engine you can safely handle. Overpowering a boat can get you into real trouble.
2. Slowdown when you are near other boats. Don’t operate too close to swimmers and other fishermen. Make sure you pay attention to any warning signs that are posted on the waterways. Treat the waterways just like you do the highway. Drive safely and courteously.
3. By positioning your boat at the correct angle to the shore. You can enhance your fishing experience. Make sure other boaters can see you as they approach.
4. Make sure you double check your checklist and have all of your fishing and boating needs before you leave the dock. The checklist should include enough fuel and battery power to last you your whole trip and especially make sure you have an anchor.
5. Your checklist should include safety equipment. Double check that you have flares, a first aid kit, at least one oar, a fire extinguisher, and a life vest for each fisherman on your boat.
6. As you’re moving from one fishing spot to the next always pay attention to where you’re going. If you need to stop to check your graphs or your flashers do this, Rather than driving the boat and allowing yourself to be distracted. Keep focused on your surroundings, as you would in a car.
