Beyond Traditional Bait for Bass and Trout

Fishing is not the hardest thing to undertake, but there are some critical components to it that you have to know. Perhaps the most important is bait. In this article, we take a look at lesser known bass and trout bait.

Bait is the holy grail of fishing. Get it right and you can have an amazing day. Get it wrong and you can watch the proverbial tumbleweed roll across the water as you try not to fall asleep from boredom.

Bass and trout are undoubtedly the two most common fish anglers go after. Just about everything is known about these fish including their eating habits. Still, some information about their favorite bait has slipped through the cracks.

Our first bait is a little blood sucker. Literally. We are talking leeches. Put a leech on your line and the fish will form a traffic jam coming after them. Both bass and trout love leeches, so they are a good bait in just about any situation.

Is there anything better than the tail of a lobster? I do not think so and neither does your average bass. Okay, bass do not eat lobster, but they love crayfish. Give one a try as bait and be ready for the feeding frenzy. No butter needed.

There is a certain bait that acts like crack for bass. The answer is the might frog. Bass go nuts for them. You want to have the bait resting on the surface of the water close to dawn or dusk. The bass will strike from the bottom like a great white shark.

As strange as it sounds, mice can also be a bait target for bass. We are obviously talking about a big fish. Get a mouse fly and shake it around in water near the shore. You are trying to make it look like a real mouse panicking from falling in the water.

The next issue is whether imitation or real bait should be used? If you choose leeches, they need to be the real McCoy. Everything else can be of the fake variety, although mouse flies are better than anything else.

Choosing the best bait for a situation is more an art than a process. While each of these bait types are loved by trout and bass, they run hot and cold with the fish. Make sure to take multiple types of bait to avoid being shut out.
