The Fishing In San Diego Is Excellent

by Tom Gibson

Come to San Diego and you will end up sitting on the beach. As you are, you will probably notice the boats cruising offshore with people fishing. Simply put, the fishing off the coast is tremendous and makes for a good day trip.

Just what is deep sea fishing? It is a trip ranging from half a day to three or four days. On one day trips or less, you board the boat at the crack of dawn and fish during the day. On longer trips, you usually leave at night so you can sleep on the way out to the fishing grounds.

Mix warm flowing water and nutrients and you will get kelp beds. Kelp beds are magnets for a wide variety of fish, which make them excellent fishing grounds. This is exactly what you find off the coast of San Diego.

When I say a wide variety of fish, I mean it. How about one trip where you can catch everything ranging from Dorado to sea bass to barracuda? Take a multiday trip and you will be able to get far enough offshore to hit the tuna.

San Diego is essentially one big launching spot for playing in the ocean, but there are really only two areas that offer deep sea fishing boats. Point Loma and Oceanside are the spots where you will find day trips and charters.

The deep sea boating operations in San Diego range from the slick corporate option to the salty dog captain on his own boat. Each has pros and cons, so you will just have to go with whatever grabs you as a good choice.

One of the slicker options is San Diego Sportfishing, Inc. Based in Point Loma, the company specializes in one day or less trips, but also offers charters to those looking for longer trips. The outfit has three boats.

If you like something a bit more personal, try the Fish Taxi in Oceanside. The boat is smaller, but Captain Don Nelson offers a more personal experience than those found on bigger operations. This is a charter boat, but with reasonable rates.

A quick word of caution about deep sea fishing. If it is your first time, make sure you are prepared. Early mornings on the water are going to be cold, so dress appropriately. As the day heats up, so will you. Layered clothing is advisable.

Bait is vital when it comes to fishing. That being said, you really do not want to feed the fish your breakfast or lunch. There are patches you can wear to stop sea sickness. Invest in them so you do not end up with a ruined trip.

San Diego has a lot to offer visitors. From the beaches to the famous zoo, there is a lot to do. If you like fishing, make sure you take at least a half day trip to check out the deep sea fishing off the coast.
